Word Portrait

For this piece I chose the theme of social conformity. Social conformity is a topic that covers a wide range of emotions. It could be wanting to fit in but not, fitting in at the cost of not being yourself, and many other things. I chose this topic because it is something that touches most everybody, especially in highschool. We constantly feel pressured to act a certain way, we are judged for our interests, the clothes we wear, the things we say, and the people we are friends with. It is a draining feeling to be constantly scrutinized over the littlest of things.

The reference photo I chose spoke volumes to my topic in my opinion. He is sorrowful, and his face is full of emotion. He is also reaching out his hand as if trying to grab what he wants but can't seem to get there. He Looks vulnerable, and longing for affection, alone in a cold and darkened space. The picture put into view what it looks like to be alone and desperate for somebody, anybody, to be there for you

The words and phrases I chose were those in relation to want and longing. Sentences such as “I can change, tell me what you want from me and I can change”, “tell me why you hate me” and “please like me” Portray the want and willingness to do whatever it takes to be accepted and not treated like an outcast. Single words such as “Vulnerable”, “outcast”, “hated” and “loner” are used to describe feeling lonely and forgotten by society. Althought music is interpretive, I also used some song lyrics like “please, please, please, let me get what i want” by the smiths that in my mind portray the begging and desprate feeling of wanting to be liked.
